Stephen Halliwell is Professor of Greek at the University of St Andrews. In his extensive publications on Greek literature and philosophy he has specialised in ancient poetic and aesthetic theory: his works in this area include a monograph on Aristotle’s Poetics (1986, 1998), a commentary on Plato Republic 10 (1988), and two translations of Aristotle’s Poetics (one for the Loeb Library, 1995). Two of his books, The Aesthetics of Mimesis: Ancient Texts and Modern Problems (2002) and Greek Laughter: a Study of Cultural Psychology from Homer to Early Christianity (2008), have won international prizes. His most recent book is Between Ecstasy and Truth: Interpretations of Greek Poetics from Homer to Longinus (2011).
